2nd Week

 September 12, 2015

This week I was only able to attend Mondays lecture because of my othe studies.     On Monday we were loarning about self branding. It was all pretty basic     information but there were also good tips.

Because I wasn't on Thursday's lecture I had to read through the material all by myself. The lecture material was interesting so the lecture must have been good, so I got very sorry couln't make it.  From the material I learned about five Ms which was a consept I hadn't heard about before. It also had some compelling advertisements and good info about it too.

Our homework was to make a video pitch. I am actually quite happy for how it turned out. I took almost a hundred takes... But this one was the best of them =)

About the blog

This blog is a part of a digimarketing course that I'm taking. I will write here every week about my progress and thoughts during the course. I've never done a blog before so I hope this will be insructive.

3rd week

September 19,2015

Hola! This week was about cultures and how you should consider different cultures while doing business abroad. My team and I did a presentation about Hungarian culture. We created a video my using animoto tool which we did because we wanted to learn how to create a video. It took us several hours to learn how to use it but I feel like we mastered it eventually. In additional we learned a lot about how to do business with Hungarians. They are very creative people and while they might seem a bit rude at first, after you get to know them you realise they are very nice and welcoming people.

There were also presentations from other groups as well. They told about Norway, Spain, Luxemburg, Albania, Latvia and Japan. I learned a lot and I will try listing it all here: The presentation about Norway was very creative and the group that presented it is extremely talented. I learned that in Albania family is very important. You should always use at least first 30 minutes of a meeting to discuss how ones family is doing. In addition if you are doing business in Albania remember to respect the family (yours and other's).  In Latvia people are superstitious: if you give someone flowers the amount should always be odd because even numbers bring bad luck. In funerals they use red roses, so it would be a huge mistake to give someone red roses as a gift. The presentation about Japan was good too. In Japan the business culture is very different from Western's. For example you should always bring a gift when you are doing business and when choosing the gift remember that the wrapping is more important than the actual present. Also respect and family are important factors in Japan's business culture.

In addition on our group meeting on Wednesday we explored the Finnish market from the point of view of a company called Lazy box. The Lazy Box is pondering if it should start shipping lingerie to Finland. We answered the questions the best of our abilities and hope that the answers are helpful.

This week I also learned that glocal is the combination of local and global. In addition I watched Aada's pitch video and really loved it. I'm going to learn how to do one myself. However the week was full of talk about how to write the blog accordingly and I was wondering if it is possible to get some personal feedback on my blog. The requirements seem very strict and I would like to know how I could improve my blogging. (I did try to be more specific while writing about my learning this week). However I am enjoying writing this blog because I haven't written a lot in English in a long time so this is really improving my long forgotten writing skills.

In addition, almost forgot about this homework,  I will tell you about my culture heritage. I am a Finn which means I'm honest, feel like home in the woods, love sauna, am socially limited and eat Mämmi and also for some reason I believe all the Swedish men are gay and Norwegians are rich. I actually once read this wonderful book called "The almost nearly perfect people" by Michael Booth and in it the Danish writer explores the Nordic cultures and  lists the prejudices that the Nordic countries have towards each other. It was a good read and I was really able to familiarise with it. However I, of course, don't have anything against Swedish people and I know they are not all gay, but somewhere deep down I still think so and despise them for trying to take credit for Finnish inventions, for example Santa Claus and Moomin. In addition being Finnish I'm naturally cautious when it comes to Russians. My mother's family is originally from Karelian which means the prejudice towards Russians runs strong in my family. Our family house is actually on the Russian side now and has been completely destroyed. All this does not mean that I would have anything against an individual Russian person but it is just something that is a big part of Finnish culture. My mother is Finnish Swede and this effects my cultural heritage. I use a lot of Finnish words that have come from the Swedish language for example vekkari is a clock. I recognize a lot of familiar Finnish culture things in the young me but I feel like the more I interact with the rest of the world, by travelling or through social media, the more I understand and adapt customs from other cultures. For example I admire the English. They are kind and might talk to you like you've known each other for years and that is a habit I would like to learn. So this was me pondering my Finnish heritage =)

4th week

September 27,2015

Hello everybody! This was the fourth week of Digi marketing and on this week my team got to meet the company that we are doing a project for. Our asigned company is Tomek’s company which is an e-business dealing industry components from seller to buyer. Tomek was speaking on our lecture about his current company and his career before that. He mentioned something, which got stuck in my head. I am not sure if it was about his current company or a company before it, but he said that he built it from zero to hero. It was a very inspirational thing to say. I hope someday I could say the same about something. In addition, I learned on Monday’s lecture what remarketing means. When you visit a company’s web page, afterwards you will start to see their advertisements on other pages too. That is a remarketing campaign and it is very beneficiary for a company like Tomek’s because when the potential customer goes to a web page that he/she trusts, for example a common newspaper, and sees Tomek’s company’s advertisement there he/she will know they can trust Tomek’s company too.

On Monday, after the lecture, and on Tuesday we met in our group to do our group work. We did a presentation on podcasting. Now I and my group know how to do one. We actually did do a podcast for our presentation.  We followed all the instructions and it turned out pretty good.

On Thursday we students taught each other. The first presentation was of a project for puma. I learned that Puma is originally from Germany and the company was born because of two brothers were fighting. It was a well done project and the video they showed in the end was creative. One group made a presentation about blogging. It was the basics that I think are kind of obvious. However sometimes everyone forgets the basics so you should always keep in mind that when blogging keep your own privacy, don’t share too much. I think the group said it well: blog because you want to not because you have to. The text always mirrors the writer’s feelings so if you are not writing “willingly” it is not nice to read.

In addition, my favourite was the presentation about growth hacking. A term totally new to me. Growth hacking is a marketing form. Usually used by start-ups with a low budget. The company’s post on wed sites that have many users and gain visibility that way. Simple but effective.

Laurea Entrepreneur Tuesday

September 29, 2015

Today I took part in a Laurea Entrepreneurship Tuesday –event. I did it to get extra credit and make up my absences. I have to say I am incredible happy I went! It was amazing and the speakers were fantastic! It was interesting to listen to their entrepreneur stories and all three speakers were inspiring. Not once did I get bored or side-tracked listening to them.

The first speaker was Sami Heino the founder of Groom. His company started because he was trying to buy a hairdresser chair from an old lady. The women didn’t want to sell him just one chair and asked how much he would be ready to pay for all the barbershop furniture and equipment. He bid a ridiculously low price and was shocked when the old lady accepted his offer. So he had to figure out what to do with the equipment and he decided to establish Groom a barbershop specialized in giving only men haircuts and grooms etc. They offer the groom experience. I like his marketing campaign which is humorous, annoying, startling and manly. Heino said that all successful businesses are based on passion and he is absolutely right.

The second speaker was Eeva-Liisa Ylälahti, who is an entrepreneur on the digi field. Her story really taught me that there is so shame on failing. You just need to get back up and learn from your mistakes. Her first company went bankrupt, so she founded a new one and did everything differently than in the first one. In addition she said that you shouldn’t be modest like so many Finns usually are. Don’t be humble in front of proud people and don’t be proud in front of humble people – a good advice. She encouraged everyone just to be themselves.

The last speaker, Ali Jahangiri, spoke also about the art of failing. In Finland failing is considered bad but it really just shows that you are trying and if you have failed you have tried. In addition like I said all the speakers were incredible and I will definitely be joining the nest ET too!

Furthermore I took pictures, you can see the below. There are pictures of each of the guest speakers and one group photo too.

5th week

October 4, 2015

Hey y’all! On Monday we had almost all the companies, that groups are doing projects for, at the lecture presenting their business ideas. The business ideas that the companies where based on where really good. Very inspiring. For me watching presentations is very educational because I try to take note of how to make a good presentation. Otherwise the lecture wasn’t very beneficial for me because my group’s company had already presented. However it was nice to hear the business ideas and what the other groups get to do.

On Thursday all the groups presented their assignments for the projects. The assignments sounded very instructive. It seems that all the groups will learn a lot of new things. My group and I learned how to use Google Adwords and search for keywords. It was a nice assignment after we figured out how to use the keyword planner.

In addition we had a guest speaker on Thursday Jyri Rasinmäki from Vapa Media. He came to tell us about problem solving and questions/stupid questions. He asked us to write down three things that we learned. First if you want people to remember you ask questions and before you ask start by stating your name and the company you work for. It gives an active and intelligent picture (if you ask good questions). Second don’t think you are right but instead think. And thirdly don’t criticize others but criticize yourself. As a leader if something doesn’t go as it was supposed to don’t think about what others good have done differently, think about what you good have done differently.

On Friday I was in Tikkurila campus watching the live stream of Nordic Business Forum. I went to see Ben Bernanke and Björn Wahlroos. They talked about the finance and the future of the world economy. A very interesting subject from two influential men. I learned that finding solutions for big economic issues isn’t easy or simple. For every solution there is as downside. They talked about the economic situation in Europe and it sounded impossible. Bernanke said that we can’t stay still but moving forward is impossible and moving backwords nearly impossible. Some extremely complicated and hard questions.  I was there to make up for my absences on next week. I would have probably gone anyway but it is nice to get extra credit since I am missing lectures because of another course.

6th Week

September 11, 2015

Hello everybody! This week I didn't make it on Monday and I tried to find some lecture material but came out empty handed. Thursday's lecture was cancelled so nothing on that either. We did have a group meeting on Wednesday to do our group work involving three companies on specific fields. We chose pulp industry and wrote about Metsä, Stora Enso and Upm. We used Prezi to do it. I’ve never used Prezi before so it was a good learning opportunity. We analysed the companies’ webpages and social media sites and found out that all of them use almost the same social media tools.

On Thursday I was on Leppävaara campus in Network to get work event. It was really rewording J I am not sure if I am supposed to write about it here but since I have nothing else… I took part on three lectures. The first one was about myths on HRM by Staffpoint and it was not what I expected it to be. The second and the third were both about job hunting and they were extremely interesting and educational. I learned very much bout seeking a job especially a spot that is not on openly available for applicants. Here’s some key points I learned: Make a list of companies you would like to work at 20-30 possible places and find out who to contact. Never contact human resources because they only fill openly open spots. Usually the best option is to seek the person who would become your boss, if you were hired. Remember to smile when calling and sit on a chair with a straight back because your attitude and position is audible on the phone. Never start by asking if they have a spot for you. Start by selling yourself and then ask if there would be a place in the firm for a person like you. In addition if you get an interview it can be useful to remind the interviewer that you will have a trial period and if you don’t fulfil their expectation it is easy to let you go. All you are asking is a chance to show that you are the right man for the job.

So these were the things I learned in Network to get Work. I also found some interesting job options.

Furthemore I hope that Monday's lecture materials will come to Drive because the subject sounded interesting and I would be very interested on reading thee dias.

7th Week

October 25, 2015

On Monday we had two a guest lecturers. The first one was Terhi Aho from Tulos Oy. She spoke to us about content marketing and search engines. I learned what conversion optimization is. A company creates two different web pages to test which one gets more traffic. The more popular one will become the company’s home page. A good way to try out different marketing techniques. In addition she spoke about search engines and what stick to my mind of that was that apparently Pinterest’s popularity is increasing in USA. Also I learned that Baidu is the second most popular search engine and it used mostly in China. The second speaker was Joanna from AMM. She was an old Laurea student and is now working in the trade union for people who work among marketing and selling.   She told a little about her job and the company but most importantly she wanted t give us three advises. Point number one: Network. Although it is said and told by so many, students still don’t realise the importance of networking. Point number two: Digitalisation. If you want to work on the marketing field you have to learn digital marketing. Marketing is more and more about digital work every day. Furthermore point number three:  This is just the beginning. When you step into work life the learning still continues. In school you only get the base. She spoke in Finnish which was great because sometime the guest speakers are encouraged to speak in English and although the lecturer might be good speakers in Finnish, they don’t quite get their message out when they try to speak in English. I like inspiring speakers and hope they can all speak with the language they are more comfortable with.

On Thursday we had groups presenting their group works of the week. Ilkka taught us to use Hubspot marketing grader and on Tuesday we evaluated three companies using the marketing grader. The company that we are doing the project for changed so we had to familiarise ourselves with the new company. In addition Ilkka taught us about digital strategy. One of the digital coaches told us about lead nurturing.

I really liked reading Johanna Laahanen’s blog since she wrote about the photography lecture that I wasn’t there to see. “Being professional photographer is not only just taking pictures - you have to know how you edit them and you have to sell your pics to your clients”. That is a really good observation because people don’t usually consider the other sides of photographing. http://digibusinessworld.blogspot.fi/

Reetta Koivikko’s blog was very visually well-constructed. Her pictures told a thousand words and you good really she that she had put some thought into its appearance. http://digitalmarketingreetta.blogspot.fi/

Teemu Laaksonen’s blog was ironically refreshing. I think he has some interesting and creative point of views. Not that I agree with him but it is always nice to get new opinions. “His lecture was a bit philosophical from time to time but I’m OK with that kind of stuff.” https://blahdigiblahblah.wordpress.com/

I think Sonja Savo’s blog posts were really good and she had made some effort. So she really has potential. Hope she gets some inspiration from writing about other’s blogs to carry on with hers. http://www.lily.fi/blogit/code-me

I enjoyed Aada Nyyssönen’s blog. It had great ideas and she really thought deeply about the things she had learned. “I have started to wonder why do we have so many different lectures that repeat the same thing over and over again? Be creative, have a specific skill, separate yourself from the group, be consistent with your marketing strategy…” I agree with her on this. It was a good point and Aada is very observant and I like it J http://mylifewithdigimonster.blogspot.fi/

The 8th week

November 1, 2015

Hello! On this week we had a lecture on Monday and our first exam on Thursday. Ilpo Kärkkäinen came to talk to us about professional blogging on Monday. His a known musician and his blog is based on helping others to make music. He also introduced us to many different tools to make your blog more successful and how to follow how many readers you have.

What did I learn? Affiliate marketing is when someone asks you to advertise their product on your blog. Many people get passive or active income through their blogs, when they get a percentage of the sales done because they advertised the product. Many people also provide work tasks for bloggers. Kärkkäinen wrote a book and the publisher contacted him because he liked Kärkkäinen’s blog. However doing a blog doesn’t have to be about money and you don’t even have to know what your passion is when you start. Like in many things, the blog will develop through time and you will find what your true passion is. Writing inspires people. In addition, if you want people to read what you write and connect with you: Be vulnerable and honest. Don’t show just the perfect side.

Our first exam was on Thursday so I spent the beginning of the week preparing for it. It was not easy and not hard either. Struggling with what word to use and I think I ended up with “It was ok”.  The problem was that spent so much time pondering that run out of time. There was so little time! I do understand that the time was so short because it was on online test and searching for the internet wasn’t the idea. Personally I don’t understand how someone could have had the time to read from the Internet and answer all the questions. It probably shows in the answers if someone did that.

In addition we had a group meeting on Monday with Bui and Anna. We talked about our new assignment. On Tuesday I and Paula did the first part of this week’s group work because we couldn’t come on Wednesday which was better for the other members of our group.

In addition I have to metion that I  really regret doing this blog using wix. This is so slow. Adding text and images and everything is really slow! And it's not just on my computer, I've tryed others too... And a little while ago they updated the system and now it is even more difficult to use and the tool bar is getting on the way. Huh, just needed to open up about this because it's driving me crazy.

9th Week

November 8, 2015

On Monday we had Sofia Auranen telling us about her career path. She told a little about the digital tools she has learned to use in her new job. In addition we had a speaker, who told us about her start-up idea. Our week assignment was to figure out a marketing and branding plan for the business idea. We presented our ideas on Thursday. The time to think about the plans was very short but we got good feedback on our ideas. It was nice. On Thursday morning we had the guy from digital people speaking about sport marketing. I think it was pretty basic branding advice.

The 10th week

November 15, 2015

This week both of our lectures were about the Finnish law. I learned that consumers have six months to return a product if it is possible to proof that the merchandise was disaffected in the selling moment. Also if the product does that work as promised. The more common return time is 14 days. If the product is purchased from the Internet, a consumer always has 14 days to return the product whether it is disaffected or just doesn’t please the consumer.

A different law is forced when both parties are equal. There is no return option in B2B selling. The buyer is required to test the product’s condition in a reasonable time from the purchase moment. There is usually many factors in legal issues and it hard to interpret them.

In addition I and Nelli finished doing a comparison about content management systems. I found out a lot that I didn’t know before. Even the concept of CMS was totally new to me. The assignment was somewhat hard because we were asked to tell the prices of each CMS. But CMS platforms are usually always free but companies have to pay to get their own domain. Anyway we did the best that we could and I learned new things. So there is a bright side even if we did the assignment completely wrong :)

11th Week

November 22, 2015

On Monday I was a little late from the lecture because of my other studies so I missed the first speaker. I was annoyed by that because apparently he was a great speaker. But thankfully the other speaker of the day, Camilla Tuominen, was great too. She is an entrepreneur who has created a system called emotion tracker. She emphasizes the importance of emotions in companies and in every day life. Everyone should always recognise the emotion and know why it is there. Why are you really angry or sad or irritated? What is the thing that made you happy?  Camilla is also against being busy because it makes people stress. Honestly I have no idea how she managed to turn her life around and stopped being hasty all the time. In addition I think that her idea is great and people should change their lives if they feel like crap all the time. Of course it’s easily said than done.

On Thursday we had two of our digital coaches taking about SEO, ticket marketing and FAQ. The first presentation was easy to follow because SEO is a familiar topic. However the second on was not. There was a lot of different facts and all of those were new. I was planning to read the material and see if I could get something out of it the second time, but it is not in Drive so I can’t do that. In addition we had group work presentation on Thursday. All of us had read two theses and done a short summary about those. The purpose of the exercise was to make us familiarise ourselves with theses, but it was kind of unnecessary because we just had another course that was all about theses.

We had two group meetings this week. The first one was on Wednesday when we told about the theses that we chose to our group and made a presentation about those. We met on Thursday also to talk to our project company via Skype. We were given feedback about our work and a new assignment. The feedback had good points in it and it was very constructive.

Didn't get a good pic of the SEO pyramid so I wrote the things down :)

Entrepreneur Tuesday 24.11. & 12th Week

November 29, 2015

I was in the year’s last ”yrittäjyystiistai” entrepreneur Tuesday today November 24, 2015. As a speaker there was Aape Pohjavirta. He wasn’t there to talk about himself, he talked about the big problems that Finland has. It was a subject that is not so popular. In Finland we usually just think that everything will be okey eventually. But like Aape said, not doing anything is still choosing not to do anything. If you decide not to do anything, let others handle it, you are as responsible of the outcome as are the ones that made the decisions. Some years ago Aape presented that we would need about 53 thousand new companies to make the same tax revenue as Nokia. Then it was a ridiculous idea that Nokia would fail. After Nokia failed Finland has managed to get only tenth of the amount of new companies needed. The other problem is Africa. It is estimated that Africa’s population will grow rapidly. Since they have no food, water or jobs in Africa will the people start to immigrate to Europe. So right now the question is how will we create jobs to Africa. Not an easy project…

He had a lot of good points and like I said this is a subject not many talk about out loud. Of course it depends on what king of channels/persons do you follow. He also recommended a book from Daniel Kahneman called Thinking fast and slow. This is a piece I already own and am on page 44 (haven’t gotten further since I have school but soon starts Christmas holiday). Anyway if you haven’t read this book I strongly recommend it ;)

I couldn’t attend the lecture on Monday because I was working. To replace my absence, I went to the entrepreneur Tuesday. On Thursday we had a lecture about content marketing which is very important when you want to make your site pop-up in the searches. We also had other students representing their group works and teaching us. There was one on video making which was good. It had the basic tips like keep a little pause before speaking so the video is easier to edit. My group presented too. We talked about podcasting and had tips on how to make a good podcast.

13th Week

December 6, 2015

On Monday we had a guest lecturer talking about selling and a representative from

leijona academy telling about their work. In addition Ilkka talked about digital

humanism. He compered Aristoteles's thought about Logos, Pathos and Ethos to Cotler’s thinking about mind, ethics and

feelings in marketing. Ilkka also encourages people to think about posit

ive things five minutes in the morning and write down everything you have learned, during the day, in the evening.

On Thursday we had an exam. I thought the time was limited to two hours. The information about it being a three hour exam should have been published in Facebook at the same time as the link to the exam. I didn't go back to Facebook because I thought I was in a hurry. It was a shame since I had more things to write but it's too late to feel sad about that now :D In addition we had a Skype meeting with out project provider. Got good feedback on our assignments and valuable tips for the furute for similar kind of tasks.

14th Week & The End

December 13, 2015

So this is my last blog post here. Digital marketing course is over and it's time for Christmas recess. Thank you lecturers and digital coaches for making this course happen, it was very inspiaring and teachful. I hope our feedback will help you guys make this course the best one. All in all I did learn a lot about social media, digital marketing, self expression and different ways to make a carreer. In addition shortly about this week: On Monday we gave feedback on the course and had assignmets of which you can see pictures below. On Thursday we presented our final presentations on what we had done for the partner company during the course. My team learned a lot from Tomasz. A big thanks to Tomasz for giving us tasks and valuable feedback!  I will probably publish my own blog, inspired by this course, about my spring trimester studing abroad. Thank you all & Goodbye!
